MEETING THE CHALLENGE: HELPING TO ALLEVIATE POVERTY IN OUR SCHOOLS
The number of children living in poverty in the our area is growing and is presently greater than the provincial average.
Our region’s poor children face the greatest risk of health problems, difficulties in school and stress-related illnesses. Documentation clearly indicates that these children are more vulnerable. Poor children have little hope and few choices.
The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB) is committed to supporting children and their families living in economically disadvantaged circumstances. They have and will continue to take responsibility for developing programs and taking measures to meet the challenges these children face in school every day. The ALCDSB’s caring and empathetic culture is based on the teachings of the Catholic Church and is manifested in the principles of equity, inclusiveness and respect.
In order to assist the ALCDSB, the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic Education Foundation (ALCEF) was established as a registered charity under the Income Tax Act. ALCEF’s objective is to raise charitable funds to counter the effects of poverty on students within the English Catholic schools across our Board. Proceeds are directed to emergency response funds for impoverished children and their families.
ALCEF is incorporated as an independent body, and the Board of Directors is comprised of representatives from major stakeholder groups such as the Archdiocese, parents, students, teachers, employee group representatives, Trustees, ALCDSB administration and the business community.
The Foundation provides immediate financial assistance to impoverished children and their families through the Emergency Response Fund. This assistance includes the provision of eyeglasses, EpiPens, medical supplies, food and clothing, transportation, and many other financial needs resulting from family crises.
The funds collected for the “Helping to Alleviate Poverty in Our Schools” Program have been raised through a variety of means. These fundraising efforts include corporate and individual donations, partnerships with not for profit and profit fundraising organizations, in memoriam programs offered through all local funeral homes and payroll deductions via the local United Way campaigns.
